Wow, this is great writing and a topic that really resonates with me. It's really cool that you have someone that modeled the life they preach. That is so special and priceless. Thank you for this wonderful read, especially the perspective of someone who has so much wisdom and knowledge (Pam!). I love finding others who share this sentiment as well even if we are the outliers.
This is an extraordinary gift- As a GenX writer and teacher, I am always working, always looking, always searching. Work work work. My wife, on the other hand, has been working for a major publisher in the US for over twenty years, which gets us both excellent health care. It’s a lot, though, and we both dream of dropping our anchor in Maine, where we’ve been part time residents for years.
People do not believe me when I tell Europeans that Americans just work, work, work. If you don't, someone else will take your job. It's wonderful to live in France where your leisure time is valued and protected.
Another tip: Experience life in another place by taking care of someone's pets while they are away. We have a lot of friends who travel free with TrustedHousitters.com One friend just posted, "It's a first. I'm taking care of a rabbit, while living in San Francisco!"
I recently heard an American politician talk about a right to leisure, and I realized I’ve only heard them stump about our right to jobs and work, never leisure. Ever.
Great tip about housesitting, I know folks who have done that! See you soon in France!
You’ve labeled what I do! Grateful for the article and grateful for the wisdom I gather from Rybus family.
